On October 9, 2025, Interior Health announced the appointment of Sylvia Weir as the new President and CEO. She acted as an interim (President and CEO) since Susan Brown’s exit in June 2025. Previously, Sylvia held a top position in the company as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), handling and managing all the business financials. In her new role as the President and CEO, she’ll be taking on the responsibilities of all aspects of the company, including strategic and leadership management, operational management, stakeholder management, decision-making, and more.
According to Interior Health, Sylvia said, “I’m thrilled to welcome Sylvia Weir as the next president and CEO of Interior Health,” said Dr. Robert Halpenny, chair of the IH Board of Directors. “As we considered a full slate of candidates, it became clear that Sylvia brings the right mix of values-based leadership, vision, and financial acumen to enable the efficient and effective delivery of front-line clinical services to support the achievement of IH’s vision.”
Sylvia carries 25+ years of professional and leadership experience and a long-standing history in the healthcare industry, spanning across Canada and the United Kingdom. During her time as an interim President and CEO at Interior Health, she illustrated her people-centered approach, followed by eco-friendly business practices. She also exhibited a deep commitment towards building healthy relationships with community partners through reconciliation and collaborative working.
In a statement, Sylvia said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve IH in this role permanently and lead an organization that is comprised of dedicated, compassionate, and talented people committed to supporting the health and well-being of all.”
She also added, “Since June, I’ve had the honour and privilege to meet with and hear from frontline staff, physicians, community, and Indigenous leaders across our health region. I am acutely aware of the challenges we collectively face both at IH and as a broader health-care sector, but I am confident that through our continued focus on engagement, innovation, strategic partnerships, and financial sustainability, we will be able to maintain our commitment to delivering the highest quality and most effective care possible to communities.”
Sylvia’s path of learning and growth includes a Fellowship in Health System Improvement from the University of Alberta and a Certification course in Project Management at UBC Sauder School of Business. She wore several hats in her professional journey. She served as a board member for Kelowna Women’s Shelter for 7 years, and as a mentor for immigrants, helping them with employment opportunities at the Kelowna Community Resources Centre. At present, she’s also a board member of the provincial Healthcare Benefit Trust.
