Ontario’s New FAST Program Expedites Access to Life-Saving Cancer Drugs | 2025 Update

The Ontario government has taken a step forward in cancer treatment with the launch of the new Funding Accelerated for Specific Treatments (FAST) program. A one-of-its-kind fast-track initiative, this program aims to provide easy and swift access to drugs and advanced treatments for cancer patients in Ontario. It means patients will no longer need to wait for prolonged periods to obtain medicines for their cancer treatment; instead, they can receive them a year earlier.

As per the Government of Ontario press release sources, Sylvia Jones, Ontario’s Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, said that, “For thousands of Ontarians facing a cancer diagnosis, fast access to treatment is critical, which is why our government is transforming cancer care and speeding up access to new and life-changing treatment options.”

She further added, “The launch of this historic program is another way we are continuing to lead not only the country, but the world, by putting Ontario patients first, opening the door for faster public access to innovative medicines.”

Canadian patients wait for a whole year or more as opposed to the patients of developed countries, to gain access to publicly-funded medical drugs. In the current medical system, any medical drug that needs to be manufactured or produced undergoes numerous processes, checks, discussions, and pricing negotiations before it gets approval for public funding.

Such delays inhibit prompt access to new drugs; as a result, patients waiting for critical medication face life-threatening issues, shrinking the survival rates. Addressing these concerns,  Jones remarked that the FAST program will shorten the timelines for patients, allowing them to access up to 10 Health Canada–approved cancer drugs every year via Project Orbis Pathway.

Some of the great minds, including government officials and industry leaders, applauded this move.

Bettina Hamelin, President & CEO, IMC, said that this will be a transformational moment for Ontario patients in Canada. She also said, “By prioritizing timely access to critical treatments, the government is setting a new national standard for patient-centred healthcare and demonstrating strong leadership in modernizing access to innovation,” sources say.

Hon. Victor Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, said, “The Funding Accelerated for Specific Treatments program marks an unprecedented milestone in Ontario’s commitment to unlocking new opportunities in the life sciences and accelerating the development of life-saving treatments.

Ontario is proud to be the first jurisdiction in Canada to address these long-standing barriers to innovation, and we look forward to seeing this program drive further discovery, attract investment, and set a new benchmark for patient-centered care for our nation.”

Gaby Bourbara, President, AstraZeneca Canada, said, “With the launch of the FAST program, Ontario becomes the first province to accelerate patient access to select high-priority cancer medicines for those with the greatest unmet medical need.

This initiative highlights Ontario’s leadership and aligns with best practices seen in other countries around the world. Faster access to life-changing treatments leads to better outcomes and improved quality of life for patients with cancer and their families.”
