Public Health Ontario Officials Confirm The End Of Measles Outbreak, But Is It True?

On October 6, 2025, the Ontario Public Health officials officially declared the end of the measles outbreak after the contagious yet fatal disease adversely affected 2,300 individuals spanning almost a year. No measles cases were reported in Ontario for over 46 successive days; however, some Canadian provinces are still reporting new cases, while those affected are recovering from months of turmoil.

Between September 21 – 27, Canada reported 18 new measles cases, of which 14 were confirmed and the remaining were likely to be affected. Through the close of September 27, 2025, 176 recent measles cases were reported in total from 6 provinces of Canada, including Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Saskatchewan, of which 161 were confirmed, 15 probable, says Health Infobase Canada

The first measles case was reported in New Brunswick in October 2024, and later, the disease spread to other Canadian provinces like wildfire. The Globe and Mail reported that it was a Thai woman who visited New Brunswick for a wedding and obliviously spread the virus to all the unvaccinated guests. Measles was declared eliminated 30 years ago in Canada, but recently the infectious disease has made its way again into the lives of Canadians.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, 282 cases were reported in 2025, of which 90% were confirmed. By September 27, 2025, Canada reported 5,024 measles cases across provinces like Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. Of these total measles cases, 4,660 were confirmed and 364 were potential ones.

On May 29, 2025, the Angus Reid Institute published a study saying that 25%  Canadian citizens do not have much trust in their provincial government concerning managing the measles outbreak decisively. The survey report further said that 22% parents and children below 18 years showed hesitancy for vaccination. Of the total 5,024 cases, there was only one death of a premature-born baby, health officials report.

In 2024, only 79% Canadians took two recommended doses of the MMR vaccine, according to the WHO immunization reports. Health officials state that the MMR vaccine has been actively used for two decades for Measles, Mumps, and Rubella, and two doses of this vaccine would give an individual close to 100% protection. If Canada couldn’t fully alleviate the measles spread by October 27, 2025, it would lose its elimination status, and experts say that this can only happen if miracles exist.
