The latest data released by the federal government reveals a progressive surge in COVID-19 cases across Canada, following an increase in positive tests and reported outbreaks. The list of COVID-19 variants includes Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omicron, and these viruses continue to unfold, taking new shapes and forms and spreading worldwide, affecting millions.
According to the Government of Canada’s 2025 report on Wastewater Monitoring, the virus variants impact people differently, and the type of variant can only be known or found after testing, which, at times, gets missed due to a lack of access to healthcare facilities in certain areas.
The Canadian government said that it’s arduous to get a 360-degree view of how COVID-19 variants are developing and spreading in the community; however, they researched and monitored the community wastewater by collecting and analyzing these samples to spot the presence of SARS-CoV-2 and its variants. The following graph represents the COVID-19 variants found in community wastewater from June 29, 02025, to August 31. 2025.

In the last week of September 2025, the COVID-19 cases were surging, while flu and RSV remained low at this time of the year. During this week, 11.4% people tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 COVID-19, 138 weekly outbreaks, followed by respiratory cases associated with the increasing COVID outbreaks. In week 39, ending September 27, 2025, COVID-19 cases in Canada mounted to 2,779, as opposed to 1,322 cases in week 35, ending August 30, 2025.
As per the Health Infobase Canada, 97% of the reported cases so far were linked to COVID-19. Of the reported respiratory cases among the tested Canadians, enterovirus/rhinovirus (a type of respiratory virus) showed up in most of the results, accounting for the highest share of positivity.

The Government of Canada reported that old COVID-19 vaccines have been phased out and discounted. In the present period, mRNA vaccines from Moderna (Spikevax®) and Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty®) targeting the LP.8.1 Omicron subvariant are in use for children and adults. Nuvaxovid™ vaccine has been given authorization to use, but is currently not available.
All senior citizens aged 65 and above, including those 6 months and older, previously vaccinated and unvaccinated, are prioritized for COVID-19 vaccination. Upon inoculation, if you face any side effects like fatigue, dyspnea, pain, or sleep disturbances, kindly refer to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) Website for more information.
